오늘은 술과 관련된 표현에 대해서 공부하겠습니다. 해티즌 여러분들 중에는 중학생이나 고등학생들도 있겠지만 대학생이 더 많을 것이라 생각합니다. 그래서(?) 술과 관련된 표현을 골라봤습니다.^^ 바로 ‘drunken’과 ‘drunk’ 입니다. 이 두 단어가 어떻게 정확한 표현에 사용 되어야 하는지 알아보도록 하겠습니다.

주어의 상태나 성질을 설명해주는 서술형용사(predicative adjective)로 사용된다. (not usually before noun)

바로 뒤에 오는 명사를 꾸며주는 한정형용사(attribute adjective)로 사용된다. (only before noun)


Problem sentence A와B를 보면

‘I was drunken’/’he must be drunken’ 과 같이 ‘drunken’이 서술형용사로 사용되어 있습니다. 포인트(1)에서와 같이 ‘drunken’은 한정적용법으로 사용되기 때문에 다음과 같이 수정되어야 합니다. 인기 힙합 그룹 ‘Drunken tiger’를 떠올리시면 됩니다.^^

그리고 제가 ‘not usually before noun’이라고 표현했습니다.
그 이유는 ‘drunk driver(음주 운전자)’나 ‘drunk driving(음주운전)’과 같이 관용표현에서는 사용이 되는 경우도 자주 있습니다.

이제 Problem sentence C를 살펴보겠습니다.

여기서는 ‘I saw the drunk man~’뒤에 명사를 바로 꾸며주려는 의도였던 것 같습니다. 하지만 뭔가 이상하죠? 네 그렇습니다. ‘drunk’는 서술형용사입니다.

그러므로 이 문장에서는 뒤에 오는 명사를 수식하는 것은 한정형용사 ‘drunken’이 올바른 표현입니다.
