오늘은 너무나도 유명한 ‘despite’과 ‘in spite of’에 대해서 알아보도록 하겠습니다.
물론 이 강의를 보시는 분들께서는 이 두 표현에 관한 지식을 충분히 습득하고 계실 것이라 믿습니다. 하지만 오늘은 좀더 자세하게 파고 들도록 해보겠습니다.

먼저 익숙하지만 확인차원에서 포인트 정리 먼저 하겠습니다.

*포인트 정리(1)
‘Despite, In spite of’는 전치사이므로 명사(Nouns), 명사구(Noun Phrases), 동명사(Gerunds), 대명사(Pronouns)들과 같은 명사적 표현(Noun expressions)들이 뒤에 올 수 있다.

이제 A번과 B번을 차례대로 수정해보도록 하겠습니다.

Corrected as..
Despite her many hours of study, she doesn’t do well on the TOEIC test.
Despite her studying for many hours, she doesn’t do well on the TOEIC test.

Corrected as..
She isn’t tired, despite her daily dance practice.
She isn’t tired, despite dancing for seven hours every day.

Despite과 in spite of 뒤에 절(clause)을 사용할 수 있는 방법은 ‘the fact that’이라는 표현을 살짝 이용하면 된다.
그렇다면 Problem sentence A와 B를 다음과 같이 수정할 수 있겠죠?
Corrected as..
She does poorly on the TOEIC test despite the fact that she studies very hard.

Corrected as..
In spite of the fact that she dances for seven hours every day, she isn’t tired.

*추가 포인트 정리(2)
‘lack of’라는 명사구를 사용해서 대조적으로 독립된 구(phrase)를 만들 수 있다.

e.g1) My grandfather doesn’t have much education, yet he knows a lot about language.

이 문장을 ‘lack of’를 이용해서 수정해보도록 하겠습니다.

e.g1) Despite his lack of education, he knows a lot about language.

‘대조적으로 독립된 구’라고 표현한 이유를 아시겠죠?

*추가 포인트 정리(3)
서술적 표현(descriptive expression)을 사용하기 위해서 ‘despite’과 ‘in spite of” 뒤에 ‘being…’을 사용한다.

자, 예문을 보면서 알아보도록 할까요?

e.g2) Although she is very beautiful, she isn’t popular in our department.

이 문장을 ‘being’을 이용해서 수정해보도록 하겠습니다.

e.g2) Despite being very beautiful, she isn’t popular in our department.

*참고
추가적으로 ‘She is very beautiful’에서 서술적 표현(beautiful)을 동일한 정도의 명사적 표현(her great beauty)으로 바꾸어서 표현 할 수도 있다.
